This is Pokemon FireRed 2, which takes place 5 years after the events of Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Kanto and Johto governments agreed that Kanto and Johto would merge. They also limited the number of Gyms in a Pokemon region to eight. Because Johto and Kanto shared 16 gyms, they had to decide which gyms would be eliminated. The Viridian, Pewter, Fuchsia, Cinnabar, Mahogany, Blackthorn, Violet, and Azalea Gyms were chosen. The Gym Leaders of those gyms lost their jobs and were forced to relocate if they wanted to continue having fun battles.

Many areas in Kanto have been altered by humans and the elements. People from Pewter City began to turn Viridian Forest into a mine, and Mahogany Town is no longer a town due to the flooding caused by its storms. Some people have increased the number of trees planted in their communities in order to improve the appearance of their communities. Pokemon from Johto and Kanto have begun to live in both regions rather than just one. Pokemon from Johto can now be found in Kanto, and more Kanto Pokemon can be found in Johto!
